Given this vineyard’s history, one expected more. It’s a medium bodied, soft tannin, early drinking Cabernet with good dark fruit but not a lotof complexity or nuance. Granted, it’s pretty young, but it doesn’t appear to have the stuffing for extended aging. Grade: B/B+

Similar comments have been made about Louis Martini Cabernets for as long as I can remember - that in youth they seemed relatively lightly-rigged and on the simple (rustic) side. I remember reading that about the 1955, which turned out to be a great wine, and about the 1968, which was likewise great. In fact, about the only significant vintage I don’t recall people saying that about was 1970—and that was an incredibly rich vintage. And, as 1970’s went, the Martini was not a full-bodied wine. Yet, the ‘70 regular bottling was outstanding into the mid 1990s and the special selection was going strong when I opened my last bottle around 2000.
