Chateau Meyney (St. Estephe) 1989

At age 15, this was still a remarkably young and backward wine. A deep ruby, with just the slightest suggestion of red brick at the rim. Relatively closed when first decanted, it gradually opened up with breathing time. A big nose of pencil shavings, blackcurrant jam, and dusty herbs. On the palate, there is still a very pronounced core of acids and tannins that suggest considerable further aging potential, but also lots of good dark fruit. Give it more time or extended aeration. Grade: A-
