As I’ve come to expect, this Behrens & Hitchcock Merlot doesn’t taste anything like the stereotypical California Merlot that famously prompted Miles Raymond to decree that “No, if anyone orders Merlot, I’m leaving. I am NOT drinking any fucking Merlot!”
Instead of forward, fleshy, and a tad flabby fruit, this Merlot offers a complex array of flavors and aromas that include rich, dark fruit but also herbs, cocoa, earth, leather, cedar, and Oriental spices. In a blind tasting, one might well mistake it for a top St. Emilion or Pomerol rather than a Californian.
It makes me very happy.
Grade: A-/A
That’s something else! So aside from being a Merlot, what plays the largest factor in being reminiscent of Pomerol? Is there something similar in the terroir from Mendocino?
Congratulations on the good find. I have a large group of friends that happen to share Miles’ spirit for Merlot. If I can convince them it’s the real deal; it would be worth suggesting this to them.
