Behrens & Hitchcock Alder Springs Merlot (Mendocino) 2002

This is precisely what a quality young Merlot should be. Plenty of forward fruit (plums, raspberry, and blueberry) with smooth tannins that make it easy to drink now. At the same time, however, there's enough stuffing to suggest that up to 5 more years in the cellar would not be amiss. A nearly perfect steak wine. (I paired it with Wagyu strip steaks from D'Artagnan Meats, french fries, and a Caesar salad. Yum.) Grade: A-/A
