W & J Graham’s 1955

At age 51, this vintage port was still going very strong. The bright ruby color suggested a far younger wine, although the lack of depth and enormous amount of sediment hinted at its considerable age. This is a profound wine, with immense legs, a big nose, and tons of flavor. The alcohol, sugar, tannins, and acids are beautifully integrated. Attractive berry and floral flavors and aromas, with a touch of licorice spice. At $85 per glass, this was a bargain. This wine goes into my all-time top five, despite (or, perhaps, because of) being one of the oldest wines I've experienced. Grade: A++
