Schramsberg J. Schram (North Coast) 1999

When previously noted in 12/2006, I gave this Chardonnay-based méthode champenoise a grade of A-/A. Two and a half years later, it is still drinking well. Apples, biscuit, and brioche toast. On the finish, there’s a suggestion of vanillin and Cognac. Same grade: A-/A

These two tasting notes raise the interesting question of whether a méthode champenoise sparkler rewards cellaring. There is a strong tradition in England of giving Champagne serious bottle age. I’ve never thought holding on to a sparkling wine until it basically goes flat makes sense. On the other hand, a top sparkler - like J Schram - can develop interesting savory flavors with a few years of bottle age. The wine seems to caramelize and the yeasty flavors tend to come to the front.
