Unlike the many Ridge late-harvest and late-picked Zinfandels from the late 1990s and, especially, 2000, this wine is actually kind of pleasant to drink. Instead of being jammy, it offers clean fruit. Instead of being dominated by a hot impression from excessive alcohol, in this wine you can actually taste the fruit and oak flavors. Toasty black cherry, blueberry, vanilla, and cloves. Enough structure to justify a few more years of aging. Grade: B+

Comments are dead on, but the rating should be A++! If you love a Zin with zest but without spoonfuls of jam, there has never been a better Zin that I’ve tried in at least 7 years. I know I’m not the only one that feels this way and consequently it is almost impossible to find now. I post this September 2006 after finding a precious bottle hiding in a liquor store in Santa Cruz, CA.
